Maternity, Family &

Child Photography

Family photos connect us to those who we love & those who came before us. They let children connect to their story. Their sense of belonging & the love you have for them. Our children grow up too fast.
I often say it happens in the blink of an eye.
When children are younger, having portraits done each year or at each milestone, is a great way
to document the progress each of them
are making, each year.

FAQ

Here are the most frequently asked questions.
If there’s anything else you’d like to know, please Reach Out

  • When are sessions held?
Newborn sessions are held when baby is under 2 weeks old. Ideally around 12 days old. This is an ideal time as they are still sleepy and can be “posed” into curly positions, similar to how they were in the womb. *Please note; this is just the ideal age. Not all babies arrive on time or without complications. So we always do our best to capture your baby even if they are a little older.
  • When should I book my session?
I advise mum's to get in touch with me when they enter their second trimester. This gives us lots of time to plan for your session & avoids disappointment with limited availability.
  • How do we book a session with you?
Simply send me an email with some details of what you are envisioning. Keep in mind that weekends book up fast as we don't generally offer Sunday's. So if you’d like a weekend date, consider booking well in advance. cassielou.photography@gmail.com OR via the "book now" contact tab. I will then contact you to organise a quick phone call to answer any questions you have & start the booking process.
  • How long will my session take?
For your newborn session, please allow up to 3 hours in the studio. I always aim for my newborn sessions to be relaxed, not rushed & we follow the lead from your little one. I allow extra time in the session for feeding & settling baby & I also know when we have siblings come in too, it takes a bit longer.
  • What do I need to bring?
To put it simply, you do not need to bring anything extra for your baby, aside from what you would generally take in their nappy bag. We have many beautiful outfits, hats, tie backs and wraps we use here in the studio, along with our extension range of newborn props. I have extra nappies and wipes in the studio for you to also use. If your little one takes a dummy, please bring that along. If you are topping up or using formula, I ask you to bring along your supplies for that too. Sometimes in the session, baby will feed a little extra than normal as we are disturbing their deep sleep with changing outfits/poses at times.
  • What should we wear?
White is timeless and complements the newness and innocence of the baby. Adding in some textures works beautifully too. Think lace, linen & knitted. Neutrals work well to keep the attention on the baby and away from your clothing. Avoid all loud, bright colours & pick items with no logos. Pastels also have that “new baby” look and are great if you want to coordinate your outfits with the nursery. Also note that we keep the studio very warm. This helps keep your baby settled & sleeping. If you are wearing something perhaps a bit warmer for your photos, do bring a lose t-shirt or something to change into when your photos are done.
  • What if my baby is fussy or crying alot?
To put your mind at ease, all babies cry & have moments of being unsettled. As a mum of four, I have had many countless hours with a sad baby, so please know a crying baby is not a put off or a reason to fret. I work with following the lead of your baby. I have been photographing newborn babies for 10 years now & have found a good rhythm & guide to photographing your little one. It is important to start the session with baby having a full tummy. I often have mum's do their earlier morning feed & time another feed on arrival to the studio. This isn't always the case as some babies demand closer feeds & that is ok. A feed as close to being here is recommended. We can take a break and let them have another feed during the session if needed. This is also very normal. We will work through any unsettled moments with warmth, rocking and patience. If your baby takes a dummy, also bring that with you. I find most babies with a full belly & being in my warm studio & wrapped tightly to start; often drift into a nice deep sleep.
  • When will my photos be ready?
There is always such an excitement to see your photos, which I love. Within 2-3 weeks of your session, I will invite you back to the studio to view your gallery of images. This will be a design & ordering appointment.
  • When will my products be ready?
Please allow 4-6 weeks for prints & products to arrive to the studio. I will then let you know & organise collection.
  • What if I need to rebook?
Some things are completely out of your control. I think we have all learned that the last two years with Covid. If for any reason you need to reschedule your session please get in touch asap. The sooner, the better. You will always be notified in advance if your session needs to be rescheduled due to weather for outdoor sessions & for any sickness etc on my behalf. All newborn rescheduled sessions need to be made within 1 week.
  • When should I book?
To avoid disappointment, please book your session as far in advance as possible. There is limited availability each month as I pride myself on giving you the very best service & experience. Maternity Sessions | Same as newborn, getting in touch when you enter the second trimester gives us time to get a date booked in for your session. Family Sessions | As soon as you start thinking about photos, get in touch with me. Some families love shooting in Summer time. The warm golden sun. Others love Autumn. Photographing a bit earlier in the evening amongst the beautiful autumn tones. Sitter sessions take place when baby is sitting independently but not yet moving around too much. Usually around 6-9 months. At this stage we can capture their little personalities coming through! Cake Smash | The best time to get in touch is when they're about 9-10 months old. This gives us time to plan & book in the session. I only work limited days on weekends, so please get in touch as soon as possible to get a date booked in.
  • How do we book a session with you?

So if you’d like a weekend date, consider booking well in advance. cassielou.photography@gmail.com OR via the "book now" contact tab. • Where do you do the session?
Maternity - I offer on location, outdoors or in the studio. Family - I absolutely love photographing families outdoors. My current most used location is at a Forest. Child Portraits - * Sitter Sessions are done in our studio. * Cake Smash Sessions - these can be done in studio or outdoors.
  • How long will my session take?
We schedule 1-1.5 hours for all our portrait sessions. I always want my clients to have time to get comfortable & to enjoy their session. I will generally keep shooting as long as I’m getting great shots. Kids seem to often have about 45 minutes of energy (and patience) for family photos, so the best shots are often gotten right at the start of the session. That’s why I like to keep the end of the session reserved for candid and un-posed photos. Walking through the forest exploring & balancing on logs.
  • What should we wear?
Start with a neutral colour palette like soft greys, blues, creams, whites, navy, browns etc and then we can add soft bits of colour. You don’t want to match everyone in the same colour but play with the same pallets of colour. Add layers of different textures like soft cottons and linens for summer or chunky knits and scarves for winter. Florals and patterns also work well – basically, be you & dress comfortably!
  • What if my children aren't participating?
My sessions are designed to be fun, fast moving and very candid. I always try to get the posed pictures done first and then dedicate the rest of the session for candid photos. You will get beautiful shots from your photo session. So don’t worry about your kids, I will take care of everything. As a mum to four busy kids with differing personalities, there is not much that I haven't seen from my kids. So, don't worry, I know kids have bad days. I have learnt that no two children are the same. I have a diploma in the "art of distraction" and use it all the time to get kids involved during the session. Your job is to relax, interact and snuggle up to your family. I never rush the start of a session. I always take some time before I pull out me camera. I want your children to feel comfortable and will get to know them a little before we start, I do this by chatting to you & your children, talking about their day & the location we are in, ask if they have been practising their smiles for me, most can't wait to show me theirs! This all is giving them time to warm up to me. I also know lots of parents spend time chatting about the session leading up to the day so they know what to expect.
  • What happens if it rains, or someone is sick?
Both these situations would not make for the best photos. So that’s not good for either of us. I often have space in my diary for back-up dates when the initial date is set. If anyone is sick, it is always best to postpone. If the weather isn't playing along, then we work out a new date for your session.
Once they have arrived, I will organise a collection time with you.
  • When is the best time for the session?
We book your session time to start 90 minutes before sunset time. Why? Golden light! My outdoor sessions are always during this golden hour, and create that dreamy-light-filled feel to images.
  • What if I need to re-book?
Some things are completely out of your control. I think we have all learned that the last two years with Covid. If for any reason you need to reschedule your session please get in touch asap. The sooner, the better. You will always be notified in advance if your session needs to be rescheduled due to weather for outdoor sessions & for any sickness etc on my behalf. I always aim to re-book you within 2 weeks. During our peak outdoor seasons, sometimes we do have to push dates a little further.
